Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County depends on donors like you to help us achieve our mission of putting God’s love into action to build homes, communities and hope. Financial support not only aids in buying materials for our houses, it also enables us to provide our prospective homeowners with financial empowerment skills, home maintenance training, and coaching on how to be civically active to improve their community.
With your generosity, families can buy a safe and affordable home, creating lasting changes through the stability of homeownership. Our 30-plus years of experience together with your financial support, can change lives forever – one family at a time!
Your generosity is changing the future for Habitat children.
Before becoming a Habitat homeowner, Aileen was renting a dilapidated townhouse that had insufficient heat. She had to use space heaters that would cause the electrical panel breaker to trip. If that wasn’t bad enough, Aileen’s three boys (5, 12, and14), had to share a single bedroom; they had no space of their own.
You can only imagine how challenging this could be for any child. The townhouse was never quiet, the boys always seemed to be fighting. It was especially tough for her 12-year-old son. He was falling behind in school. He was being forced to change school, because of his poor grades.
Aileen was beside herself.
When Aileen came to Habitat for Humanity, she had a simple dream to become a homeowner. She wanted to provide each of her boys with their own bedroom. Aileen worked hard to complete her 225 hours of sweat-equity, which included civic, financial and home maintenance training.
In March, Aileen purchased her four-bedroom townhome at Walnut Ridge in the City of Wilmington.
Now that they are settled into their new home and the boys have their own bedrooms, Aileen is noticing a real change with all three of them. They aren’t fighting anymore, and their new home is actually quiet.
The most noticeable change has been with her middle son. He is now thriving at a new charter school. When asked what was different, he credited it to having his own bedroom, where he can have a quiet place to study.
