On October 12, 2017, we celebrated the completion of five more new homes on the Eastside of Wilmington, at 14th & Walnut Streets. These five homes were the second and final phase of Walnut Ridge, a nine-townhome project we built with the support of major donors like Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, Delaware State Housing Authority, the City of Wilmington, Federal Home Loan Bank of Pittsburgh, and DuPont.
Over 120 members of the Wilmington community braved the wind and rain to share in this significant milestone with our five newest homeowners. As is Habitat tradition, our new homeowners received the keys to their homes from local business leaders that supported Walnut Ridge and Bibles from local members of clergy whose congregations helped fund the foundations for these homes. These two acts serve as ceremonial reminders to our homeowners that the entire Wilmington community, not just Habitat, is invested in their continued success.
“Becoming a homeowner is a huge accomplishment,” said Latayvia Terrell as she addressed the crowd after receiving her keys from Chip Rossi, Market President of Bank of America. “Stability is an important key to child development. Thanks to Habitat, I’m now able to provide stability for my two children,” she continued.
After the other four homeowners received their keys and Bibles, and a blessing of all the homes by Rev. Terrence Keeling of Central Baptist CDC, the entire crowd transitioned to the front of the homes as the new homeowners unlocked the doors of their fully completed homes for the first time. To end the occasion, the five families gathered with friends and other supporters to enjoy refreshments in their new kitchens.
